Summary: John held himself together after Sherlock jumped but the emotional strain was enormous and Sherlock didn't fare much better. When Sherlock finally returned they were both just so glad to reaffirm their bond they didn't really think about the future, or if they did they simply assumed their lives would carry on as they always had.
Needless to say they soon discover that their prolonged separation has had a very specific effect on John; the results of which mean nothing will ever be the same again. Told entirely in 221B’s this story charts all the little things Sherlock and John experience as their lives change forever.
The B’s so far are Blood, Breathe, Bag, Beta, Bucket, Brother, Brilliant, Bet, Best, Bother, Bang, Bleak, Beginning, Baby, Born, Biscuit, Beneath, Bump, Basement, Beetroot, Blimp, Blur, Benedict, Beg, Break, Butterfly, Boy, Brooding, Bemused, Blue, Broken, Bourbon, Before, Breeches, Bedroom, Bewildered, Bassinet, Bee, Bach, Black, Blinked, Blame, Blind, Brain, Better, Blaze, Back, Birth, Been, Blooming, Betty, Bored, Bone, Believable, Burning, Bladder, Bugger, Blank, Beautiful & Bond.

Author's Note: This isn't standard Omegaverse because, as I'm not comfortable writing dub/non-con scenes, I decided to create
my own version. If you want to know more about it, I've done an explanatory post here.

Chapter 60 - Bond

‘He’s so tiny,’ Sherlock says from his perch on the edge of the bed, eyes fixed on every twitch of his son’s mouth as John gives Hamish his first feed, ‘and so perfect. How did we do that?’

‘Same way we’ve done most things in our relationship,’ John stifles a yawn, ‘completely by accident.’

‘Mr Holmes,’ Rory calls as Sherlock gives a snort of laughter, ‘a moment, please.’

‘Do you need anything?’ Sherlock asks, only moving when John shakes his head, ‘OK, I’ll only be a second.’

John hums in response and Sherlock forces down his instincts to remain at their side and goes over to the man at the door.

‘I know you’re desperate to get back,’ he says, forestalling the sharp words on Sherlock’s lips, ‘but I wanted to let you know that, despite several of your well-wishers best efforts, no one will be allowed in before tomorrow morning.’

‘Oh … good …’

‘Yes,’ Rory smiles, stepping out of the room, ‘buzz if you need anything.’

‘I’m back,’ Sherlock says unnecessarily as he slips in beside John, wrapping his arms round them both.

‘What did Rory want?’ John leans back, pressing his lips to Sherlock’s neck.

‘To say there’ll be no visitors admitted tonight,’ Sherlock murmurs, first kissing John’s forehead then Hamish’s cheek. ‘To give us some proper time to bond.’

That is one genius of a midwife there... Though I am certain Rory has his own, misty-eyed reasons...
Sigh... I do hope that John gets some sleep. I am certain that Sherlock is going to stare at the tiny fingers and toes and the perfection that is his sleeping babe.
Smiling so much as to deepen my crows feet...

Yay to the smile!
Rory is good, isn't he. Although you've made me feel slightly melancholy about him now. Ah well, he loves his job so it's not too bad.
And as for sleep ... there might be something about that in tomorrows instalment ;)

Am I terrible for wanting a longer fic with the boys plus moar fluff? This is just.... yeah... consider me melted.

Also, my Hamish Muse may want to ask your baby Hamish to play. The universe might explode in a Squee Apocalypse.....

Nope you are not terrible. In fact the plot bunnies think you are their bestest friend in the whole wide world ever and want to love you and snuggle you and ...
*beats plot bunnies away from the screen with a rubber carrot and retakes control of the keyboard*
... there are plans. There may even be notes. But I've just started an MA in philosophy so what I don't have is time :(
But ... I melted you? Your fics have often melted me and now I have melted you! *does the happy dance of happiness* I feel pretty good about that.
Oh and John says it's a little early to be thinking about play dates but he's glad to know your Hamish might be a nice friend for his. Sherlock, meanwhile, is muttering about the statistical probabilities of both babies having a fairly unusual name. He's got his thinky face on ... I suspect he might be on to us.

Warm fuzzies. Just covered in warm fuzzies here (which is nice 'cos I've been cold all day).

I wanted to let you know that, despite several of your well-wishers best efforts, no one will be allowed in before tomorrow morning.’
Ha ha. Mycroft. ^_^

Hurrah for the warm fuzzies and yes, Rory was talking about Mycroft :)

I'd think Mrs. Hudson would be the problem, My probably has CCTV access in the hospital

It's a private hospital and there are definitely no CCTV cameras in the labour ward. Sherlock checked. Twice :)

Completely by accident, indeed. Poor Mycroft, completely foiled by Rory the Midwife.

Okay, I gotta talk shop for a moment. How do you envision the whole breastfeeding thing in omegaverse? Because if you think about it, it doesn't make sense than the male omegas would be able to produce large quantities of milk, at least not compared to the female omegas or betas, since they don't really have breasts. I mean, they've got the stuff, clearly, but unless the pregnancy hormones really change their body shape, they're not going to have space for a whole lot of breastmilk. Which makes me wonder: does this mean that most male omegas would have to supplement with formulas? Are children of male omegas going to end up being statistically smaller than children of other omegas/betas? And if so, could that be a reason why there are usually meant to be fewer male omegas in society, because their children have small long-term survival rates (particularly in the years before decent formulas existed)? And lastly, would the fact that male omegas need additional assistance in feeding their children mean a greater likelihood of polyamorous relationships (the idea that it takes a village, taken to an extreme)?

I have clearly been spending far too much time thinking about this....

IT'S A VALID ISSUE. You know, as far as the concept of men breastfeeding can possibly be a valid issue. :)

From: [identity profile] auntiesuze.livejournal.com
It's an absolutely valid issue. In fact, I've wondered the same thing. But then I thought about small-breasted women...do they have issues with breastfeeding or does the tissue just adjust to accommodate? I think that the male Omega bodies would have to adapt in a similar way for breastfeeding to really be an option. Or, as you say, maybe they supplement with formula? Hm. *ponders*

Having neither small breasts nor personal experience with breastfeeding....I think in the cases of small-breasted women, it's more a matter that the children are smaller to start with. I mean, small-breasted women tend to be smaller themselves, yes? (All things being proportional.) So the babies wouldn't need as much milk anyway. (Again, all things being proportional.)

But in the case of the guys - well, we joke that John Watson is short, but he's not small. (I think Martin Freeman is taller than I am.) Hamish isn't going to be a small baby, comparatively speaking, and unless John's got TARDIS-boobs, I can very easily see him needing additional milk in order to not be hungry.

Hmm. Maybe children of male omegas move on to solids earlier than other babies?

They could do it *easy*! Women with small breasts do NOT starve their children.(*) Our cousins, the apes, nurse their babies just fine with small breasts.
-- I expect the breasts would fill, as in any pregnancy- to an 'A' cup,( perhaps even a 'B' in some men) -- which is enough milk even for twins.

many human breasts are largely 'ornamental'-- much bigger than is needed for milk production. They are Not Just milk producers.
They serve to attract attention, and advertise stored fat/fitness.

(*)My Grandmother had small tits, nursed eight children, including two twin-sets

Extremely good to know, and very sorry if I offended. Again, I have no experience with breastfeeding itself, so I appreciate the correction.

Actually, it helps explain what I was wondering - if your grandmother could feed twins, then John probably wouldn't have had any problems feeding Hamish (or any other omegaverse baby who came along).

(I say probably, because I do have a friend on the smaller side who couldn't breastfeed at all, so mostly I was thinking of her when I wrote the above.)

([livejournal.com profile] bradspyjamas, very sorry for hijacking your reviews.....)

I'm going to have to edit my 'world builiding' post to add some of this in now :)

Butting in with some more Nursing (medical this time) knowledge.

As said above, women with small breasts generally have no trouble nursing 1 or more children. Boobs, like wider hips, are there to attract a mate and say "Look at how big and healthy I am, I'll be able to carry a child for you no problem"

Difficulties with breastfeeing arise from other problems such as; hormonal problems in producing milk (i.e.: some women produce less or none at all), inverted nipples, and some women are sensitive find nursing very painful.

Babies have problems too, some won't or can't latch on properly. This can be caused by the baby having a problem with their pallet or tongue - which can be corrected.

Newborns are generally lazy and you have to remember that breastfeeding is much more work for baby then bottle feeding. As I explained to many a new Mom and Dad; it's the act of sucking that releases the milk from the ducts down through the nipple and into the baby's mouth. Bottle's more or less "drip" the milk into their mouths meaning it is much less work.

I've never given it much thought but since breast tissue expands and swells during pregnancy (about two cup sizes is average) it's possible that an OmegaMale, with all the hormones swirrling around in his systems, would have breastbud developmen during the first trimester and then go from there.

Newborns are generally lazy - This just made me laugh so hard (though I'm sure it's true!). XD

Thank you for the medical perspective! I kind of figured that it would just be a matter of the tissue expanding in the same way that it does for women.

Hm. Now thinking of poor John having to deal with sore "moobs" along with all the other pregnancy issues. Makes sense!

I can't believe there's only two chapters left!! T____T

‘Same way we’ve done most things in our relationship,’ John stifles a yawn, ‘completely by accident.’ Best. Line. Ever. And so, so true!

This is just so very sweet. Newborn babies are just the most amazing miracles. :)

And I liked that line too :)
